Tips for helping your pet cope with separation anxiety
Here are a few tips that should ease a seasonal transition and minimize any stress that may cause separation anxiety:
- Begin getting your pet used to more frequent alone time by leaving them alone for short trips.
- Begin to get pets accustomed to items associated with your absence, like lunchboxes and car keys in order to desensitize them to nervousness when it is actually time for you to leave.
- For dogs, proper crate training creates a safe place for them when you’re not around. Make sure that the crate is large enough for them to stand up and stretch, and rotate the toys you leave with them for variety.
- For cats, leaving a stimulating toy for the cat during your absence (one that releases kibbles as the cat plays are popular).
- Doggie daycare or a dog-walking service allows for socialization when you are gone.
If your pet does better in social situations, we recommend Camp Bow Wow, North America's Premier Doggy Day and Overnight Camp® in Livermore as a home away from home while you”re out.
